April 5–6, 2024, was one for the books! I had the privilege of speaking at the PALS Childcare Director/Owner Retreat at beautiful Stoney Creek Ranch in New Ulm, Texas—and I’m still riding the wave of inspiration.

This year’s theme, “Get Your Business on Target,” brought together directors, owners, and leaders in early childhood education for two days of connection, learning, and recharging. With only 20 golden tickets available, the retreat felt intimate and powerful—just the right setting to refocus and sharpen our leadership skills.

My Session: Building & Maintaining a Budget

I had the honor of leading a session on how to build and maintain a childcare budget—a topic that can feel intimidating but is truly the backbone of a thriving center. We talked about practical strategies for creating budgets that actually work, avoiding common pitfalls, and building financial confidence as a leader.

More Than Learning—Memories Made

Beyond the classroom, the retreat was packed with unforgettable moments. I sponsored an ax throwing session (yes, it was every bit as fun as it sounds!) and loved seeing directors let loose, laugh, and cheer each other on.

And let’s talk about those Snackle-boxes—the ultimate mix of creativity and deliciousness. Whoever came up with that idea deserves a gold star!

Community That Inspires

One of the best parts of this retreat is always the people. Getting to spend time with Vickie Maertz, OTR, OTD, reminded me why community matters so much in this field. Vickie’s insight and energy are contagious—I always walk away from our conversations with fresh perspective and motivation.

Why These Retreats Matter

Running a childcare business is deeply rewarding, but it can also be exhausting. Events like the PALS Childcare Director/Owner Retreat give leaders the space to reset, learn, and return home energized. From business training and self-care to networking and brain boosts, this retreat had it all.

I’m grateful to have been part of this year’s lineup of featured speakers, and I’m already looking forward to the next opportunity to gather with this incredible community.
